Reiki History

Usui Reiki is a form of energy healing that originated in Japan in the early 20th century.

The history of Usui Reiki is centered around its founder, Mikao Usui, who developed the system after a spiritual quest for healing and self-discovery.

Mikao Usui was born on August 15, 1865, in the village of Yago in the Yamagata district of Gifu Prefecture, Japan. He grew up in a Tendai Buddhist family and was exposed to spiritual practices from an early age. In his adulthood, Usui became interested in various healing methods and pursued the study of medicine, psychology, and theology.

Around 1922, Usui embarked on a 21-day meditation retreat on Mount Kurama, a sacred mountain near Kyoto, Japan. During this spiritual journey, he fasted and meditated, seeking a way to access healing energies that could promote physical healing, spiritual growth, and personal development. It is said that on the last day of his retreat, he experienced a profound spiritual awakening, during which he received the gift of Reiki energy. This awakening marked the beginning of Usui’s journey as a Reiki healer and teacher.

Usui Reiki is a non-invasive healing technique in which the practitioner channels universal life force energy through their hands and directs it into the recipient’s body. The goal is to promote relaxation, reduce stress, and facilitate the body’s natural healing abilities. Reiki is not associated with any specific religion and is considered a spiritual practice that can be integrated with various belief systems.

Over the years, various branches and styles of Reiki have emerged, each with its unique interpretations and practices. Despite the different lineages, the core principles and beliefs of Usui Reiki remain focused on healing, personal growth, and spiritual development through the flow of universal life force energy.
